The darkness of depression can feel like an endless tunnel, but Bach Flower Remedies offer a gentle, natural way to restore emotional balance. Edward Bach believed that our unwanted emotions could be eased and healed by harmonizing our inner state with nature’s healing energy.

If you’re struggling with feelings of sadness, isolation, or despair, these remedy suggestions can provide the healing support you need.

Understanding Depression

Depression manifests in many ways—persistent sadness, lack of motivation, or a sense of hopelessness. Bach Flowers work by addressing the emotional root of these feelings, helping you regain a sense of inner peace and connection.

Here are some suggestions to help with your feelings of depression…

Bach Flower Remedies for Depression

Mustard – For sudden, unexplained sadness. This depression descends suddenly, like a black cloud and you seem to live in a fog. (Mustard – no cause). Mustard helps restore joy and lightness.

Gentian – If you need Gentian, it’s depression, disappointment and being discouraged comes on after a setback. (Gentian – a definite experience causes the depression ). Gentian restores our faith in the process of life

Please Note: You don’t need both Mustard and Gentian as one has no cause for the depression and the other one does have a cause for it.

Elm – When you feel overwhelmed by responsibilities and doubt your ability to cope. We can feel overwhelmed by any emotion. Elm loses confidence when you find the weight of the responsibility of your work, too heavy to bear. Elm restores confidence.

Sweet Chestnut – For deep despair and anguish: there are feelings of being at the end of your endurance. This is the remedy for the dark night of the soul. Sweet Chestnut offers comfort and hope.

Pine – If self-blame and guilt weighs you down, Pine helps release self-blame and fosters self-acceptance.

Larch – is the confidence remedy. You might not realise it but the lack of confidence can lead to a very deep and debilitating depression. Larch will restore confidence and allow you to enjoy life.

How to use Bach Flowers

Bach Flower Remedies are taken as drops in water or directly on the tongue. You can combine up to six remedies to tailor them to your emotional needs.

Healing takes time, but with Bach Flowers, you can gently guide yourself back to balance, rediscovering joy and connection.

Here is a blog to tell you the most effective way of taking the remedies.

Jessica was in her 50’s when she came to see me and she had only one problem. Well, she had more than one problem; she had lots of problems and they all related to lack of courage and lack of self-confidence.

You might not realise it, (unless you’ve experienced it) that a lack of confidence has far reaching effects. It can bring deep despair and a “depression” that affects every area of life. These days the word ‘depression’ is handed out to almost everyone who has difficulty dealing with some parts of life.

Like a rotten apple in the barrel, it only takes one apple to infect the whole barrel…and a lack of courage and confidence is the same – it infects every area of life.

Here’s Jessica’s story

Jesscia had been self-conscious since early childhood. She can still remember how embarrassed she got when people talked to her and how she always felt she couldn’t do as well as the other children her age.

She didn’t mix well with others, so was inclined to kept to herself.

But there’s more and I wonder if you can relate to any of these:

You automatically feel inferior to others.

You admire people who are successful, but don’t believe you’re capable of being successful yourself.

You expect failure.

Have used illness as an excuse so you don’t have to tackle something.

Feel useless and have no feelings of self-worth or self-esteem.

If so, your problem is simple – just like Jessica and you’re filled with self-doubt, you lack self- confidence.

It’s so quick and simple to say, and yet the lack of confidence, and having no courage, has a profound effect and influences every part of your life – it is the ‘rotten apple’ that affects the whole barrel.

Back to Jessica

As you can imagine, Jessica never made much of her career – even though she was quite capable. She did her work – but never any more. She’d never take risks or applied for promotion.

Jessica sat at the back of the office and plodded along. She was not prepared to step ‘outside the box’ because she was absolutely convinced she would fail. She knew what she could do and she stuck to it.

Do you doubt yourself and lack confidence?

It’s a blunt question I know, particularly as we might not know each other well. If you do then, relax, I know how you feel – because I’ve been there – more often than I’d care to admit! And I have a solution for you, so read on. I’ve suffered with self-doubt and have felt the knock-on effects all my life.

How well I remember trying to work out which remedy I needed when I first started to use the Bach Remedies. Not only did I find it difficult to identify how I felt but I couldn’t work out which remedy I needed. I didn’t realise then that we could have more than one feeling at once!

But we do, all the time. No wonder you find it difficult to identify how you feel.

A Nervous Breakdown

Jessica had never been good at handling the stress of life and some years ago had a nervous breakdown.

How does a ‘nervous breakdown’ show itself? For Jessica, it showed at first as an extremely severe bout of debilitating ‘flu, which hung about for months. She was emotionally and physically exhausted. She didn’t have the power: the confidence to face the world.

She was severely shaken by her bout of flu and she lost what little confidence she had and so had not been able to return to work.

During this time Jessica felt very alone. She’d often felt lonely but didn’t have the courage or confidence to meet new people and try new things. She blamed herself for not doing what she felt she should have done to live a fulfilling life. She said she felt she was constantly living with an undercurrent of shame and guilt that she hadn’t done more with her life.

Not Sleeping Well

Jessica wasn’t sleeping well either. She would wake around 3 am with the same anxieties: the same worrying thoughts night after night. She said it was rather like all her thoughts jumped onto a child’s merry-go-round and played there for hours. She couldn’t find a solution to any of her problems and night after night she would be awake while her troubles played on the merry-go-round.

Jessica was tired – exhausted in fact. She wanted to feel better and hoped to regain enough confidence to be able to go back to work.

So I mixed the following remedies together, especially for Jessica’s feelings.

The Courage and Confidence Mix

Larch – for self-confidence

Mimulus– gives courage to face the anxieties of life

Pine – to help heal the shame and guilt she felt for not trying to live a happier and more fulfilling life.

White Chestnut – to stop the unresolved thoughts from going around and around.

Olive – to help with fatigue and exhaustion

Gentian – as she was very discouraged from the set-back of his illness.

I’m sure you can relate to some of these feelings (if not all of them) and you can see how these remedies all work together beautifully to strengthen and give courage and confidence.

If you’re not sure to take the Remedies, click here for the most effective way to take Bach Flower Remedies.

If you’re lack of confidence has gone so deep that its turned into depression, perhaps this article will help you.

Grief and a broken heart, along with anger, I believe, are two of our deepest feelings. They both seem to go into the depths of our being and tear at our soul.

Both emotions give birth to a whole host of other feelings from despair, being discouraged and disappointment. Leading to loneliness and lack of self-worth. And of course, it conjures up feelings of “how am I going to manage without him/her?”

Bach Flower Remedies can help you heal your grief, and sooth other feelings too. But sometimes its difficult to chose which of the 38 remedies suit you best. These FREE Bach Flower Guides can help you.

his blog is about grief : the pain of a broken heart. But if anger is raging within you then this blog will help you too.

At sometime in our lives we all suffer from the loss of someone or a pet we love dearly. I’m afraid its part of being human and no one escapes this feeling. It happens to us all – more than once I’m afraid.

Please don’t misunderstand me, I’m not belittling bereavement or sorrow. I’ve been there and got the T shirt. In fact, I’ve got lots of these T shirts – just like you – relationships that broke my heart and of course, the loss of my beloved parents. And how I wish I’d know about the Remedies in those days.

Grief at the loss of a loved one

A bereavement is always a shock, even when you expect it, it’s still a shock. And then comes the pain.
You feel as if there’s a stone in your stomach and your heart is literary broken – both that the same time. The feelings of being completely lost and alone are mixed together so you’re unable to distinguish one feeling from another. And the only thought you can muster is “how do I get through today”?

Without healing, that thought (and similar ones) run through your mind continuously, usually for months.

Where do you go now? What do you do now? How can you pull your life together?

And what if you were unable to get to the bedside quick enough to say the words you know you should have said long ago. What then? Self-blame! Guilt! Such awful turmoil – all mixed up with sadness.

Broken Relationshiops

But these feelings are not exclusive to the death of a loved one, many have a broken heart from a broken relationship – a long marriage where one partner thinks all is well and is shocked and broken-hearted when the other wants to leave.

t’s not the length of the relationship that signifies the depth or the pain. We can fall into the deepest of loves in a matter of minutes (we all know that love-at-first-sight is true!) The breaking of a relationship brings the same pain and we ask ourselves the same question? “How am I going to get through today”?

And, in my house, (before I knew about Bach Flower Remedies) we got through the day by making endless tea!

Bach Remedies can heal a broken heart

Here are three remedies that will help heal your grief – even if its from 20 years ago: even if you’ve pushed grief down, it will have become loneliness and depression – these Bach Flower Remedies will see you on the road to recovery.

Sue came to one of my afternoon workshops on the Bach Flower Remedies. This is Sue’s tale. Her husband had died ten months earlier and she was not adjusting well at all. Her family were hugely supportive and very worried. As well as grieving the lost of the love of her life and her constant companion since mid teens, she was lonely and depressed too.

Star of Bethlehem is the first remedy you need

It doesn’t matter how old your grief is, this remedy will help. It’s also the remedy for shock and trauma as well.

Star of Bethlehem is one of the remedies in Rescue Remedy. So if you don’t have Star of Bethlehem, take Rescue Remedy,

Gentian

Gentian is needed when you are ‘knocked back’ by an experience. It seems to over simplify and belittle the depth of emotions you may feel, if I say ‘you’ve suffered a set-back’.

You think everything is going well, and then you find out about an affair or your loved one wants to move on. You’re shaken to your core as well as being broken hearted This is a huge set-back for you.

You are bitterly disappointed and become depressed (Gentian is an excellent remedy for depression – if you can remember your ‘set-back’). You’re so discouraged by your experiences that you’re sceptical about life ever getting better. You’d like to get better, but you don’t believe you can.

It’s worthwhile having Gentian in your Bach-kit because it isn’t only for the big disappointments. If your child didn’t do as well as they hoped at school, or wasn’t chosen for the sports team or didn’t receive the phone call or text from the new boyfriend/girlfriend – the Gentian will take away the feelings of disappointment before they festers and go deeper.

Pine will help you, when you feel ashamed

If only I’d….

If you don’t get to the bedside in time; if you’ve been working so hard for too long that your partner moves out: if you didn’t do enough for your parents – you always meant to visit once a month, but never got around to it, then you’re going to feel guilty about it. You meant to go and help your mum with the housekeeping and dad with garden – but you never got around to it – and now its too late and Guilt takes over. You can push guilt down until it turns into depression

If only .. ” runs through your mind constantly. And you feel awful. You’re ashamed of yourself. The list of ‘should haves’ and ‘could haves’ run endlessly through your mind as you’re filled with guilt! And no matter what you try to do: talking yourself out of, going partying, watching junk on the TV – nothing helps. The Bach Flower Remedy Pine will help you.

These are just three of the 38 Bach Remedies. Although these three will help you, you could benefit from some of the other remedies too.
