There is something quite charming about toddlers and young children. I remember the delight of my children when they picked tomatoes or dug up new potatoes in the vegetable garden. I remember watching the cogs in their minds work, as the consciously strung together a sentence. Young children really are remarkable.

Children are charming and delightful – until they’re not! And then, on my goodness, they are a challenge. If you have young children then you understand what I mean.

Changing grumpy children into happy children is ‘child’s play’ with Bach Flower Remedies.

The remedies are perfectly safe to give to children and they heal and soothe upsets and troubles as simply as you can count 1, 2, 3.

There are 38 remedies which cover every one of our feelings. But as some remedies are similar, it can be quite difficult to choose the best remedies to help your children (and yourself too).

I recently met a lovely group of young mothers who were curious about alternative ways to help their children (and themselves) through the trials and tribulations of life. Through the magic of technology, at the click of a button, I was instantly transported into 7 living rooms in eastern America, talking to 7 mums who wanted to know how Bach Flower Remedies could help their children – and they had a list of questions for me.

The Terrible Twos

Most of the mums had toddlers who seemed to be starting their Terrible Twos early as they were beginning to show their strength of will and their independence. They were being stubborn and having tantrums.

Most of the mums had toddlers who seemed to be starting their Terrible Twos early as they were beginning to show their strength of will and their independence. They were being stubborn and having tantrums.

Holly. Tantrums are like child’s play to deal with Bach Flowers. Holly fits the tantrum scenario perfectly.

This remedy is for the anger we feel when we’ve been treated unfairly. And yes, a toddler can feel that. They’re naturally curious and want to explore everything and when they’re stopped; when they can’t do what they want, they get really cross and sometimes violent too. Holly will help heal and soothe the Terrible Twos just as it’ll help and soothe you, when you’re angry about life.

Young Lilly wakes from her afternoon sleep screaming and is very angry. If her mother tries to pick her up or console her, she gets even angrier and hits her mother. Holly will soothe little Lilly and save her mother from a lot of heart ache.

Young children can get jealous easily. Holly heals jealousy. Even when your pets are jealous of the new baby, Holly will sort that out too (2 drops in the dogs drinking water for a few days and you’ll see the difference).

Clinging and anxious

Sarah mentioned that 2-year-old Amy was clinging and was always anxious.

Children are naturally curious so, if they’re reluctant to try something new, this could be caused by a lack of confidence mixed up with their anxiety.

I recommended that Amy be given Mimulus. Mimulus people are gentle and kind and anxious about life. It’s the remedy for known fears – like fear of spiders, fear of dogs, fear of flying etc. Those in need of Mimulus are anxious about most things in life.

Larch is the remedy for self-confidence. A child who is hesitant about attempting new things will benefit from being given Larch.

You can see that Larch and Mimulus go really well together and I suggested that Sarah give little Amy both these remedies. It’s that easy – like child’s play. (I’ve covered how to give the remedies towards the end of the blog).

Night terror panic

Night Terrors are dreadful things. Nancy’s daughter, Alicia, was having night terrors. She was waking in the night, crying and really frightened. It’s very upsetting for the child and the mother.

I recommended that Nancy give Alicia either Rescue Remedy – (or Rock Rose) – and Aspen. (Rescue Remedy contains Rock Rose. Nancy’s more likely to have Rescue than Rock Rose). Rock Rose is the remedy for ‘urgent fear’ that we call panic!

Aspen is for unknown fears. We feel afraid without being able to identify what we’re afraid of.

Stress of motherhood

This deserves to be a blog in its own right, but I’ll add a little here about the stresses of motherhood to help young mums.

Mothers want to do their very best for their children and are inclined to chew over the past and are hyper vigilant about every detail – everything must be ‘just right’. A lot of mothers can have a perfectionist-nature when it comes to how they bring up their children. They are very frightened about not getting it right.

Now a third remedy joins the Larch and Mimulus combination to make a brilliant trio…

Pine is the remedy for feelings of “I’ve done it wrong” and “I could have/should have done so much better. I didn’t do enough”. It’s the remedy you need when you beat yourself up.

Young mothers always have too much to do in too little time. And for years they don’t get a full night’s sleep!

If you find you’re not getting enought sleep and are exhausted, Olive is the remedy for fatigue and will help you through the day.

Vervain is the remedy for being over stressed – trying to achieve too much in too little time.

If you become irritable when you are stressed and exhausted, Impatiens is the remedy that will help you – and of course your children too, when they’re grumpy and irritable.

Taking the remedies is like Child’s Play

It’s easy and simple to take the remedies. There are 3 ways to take the remedies – all are effective, and one way is not any better than the others. One is much more expensive than the others – but all methods work well.

Put 2 drops of Rescue (and 2 of every other remedy) straight on to the tongue. The remedies are preserved in brandy and the strong taste is a shock to the children. Please be kind to your children – don’t give the remedies straight from the bottle. Put the remedies in water, milk or juice.

Put the drops into a small glass of water and sip frequently throughout the day.

For long-term treatment, make a Treatment bottle. This is a 30ml bottle with a dropper. Fill the treatment bottle to the shoulder with mineral or filtered water and add your chosen remedies. Then take 4 drops from that bottle at least 4 times a day or put 4 drops into a glass of water and sip frequently throughout the day.

It may seem a lot to take in, but when you actually do it, you’ll find how easy it is. It’s child’s play and then you’ll be able to watch your children play happily and contentedly.

The Bach Flower Remedies have been my constant companion for over 30 years. They have stood by me and helped me deal with some really hard times in life.

Over to you

When does the year begin?
As far as nature is concerned, the year begins with the Spring Equinox.
That’s when it begins.
This is the first turn of the wheel is Possibility.
The first turn is Spring.

The Energy of Spring

Have you ever considered how much energy it takes the trees, shrubs, plants and flowers to push their way through the cold hard soil of winter?

It takes an incredible amount of energy to bring spring into being.

Spring is now dressed in her Sunday best. Everywhere there are beautiful yellow and orange spring flowers and trees covered in white blossom line avenues and roads.

Yesterday whilst driving I’ve noticed that Cherry Plum standing proudly in a row of skeleton-looking trees. It was a mass of white flowers and in the next week, the new buds on the trees will begin to unfold their yellowy-green leaves.

Spring is bursting forth everywhere. (At least, it is in the northern hemisphere).

All this takes tremendous energy.

However this need for more energy in Spring is not just revelant to shrubs and flowers!

Have you ever thought that WE also need a lot of energy to bring us from the cold, dark days of winter into the light of spring? Especially as the weather is not yet stable and we’re still having grey damp days.

Remedy Suggestions to help you have more energy for Spring

However, I’m sure you’d like some Bach Flower suggestions to help with low energy levels now.
Here’s quick tip: – always look at why your feeling as you are. I’ll show you what I mean in my remedy suggestions.

Olive
The first and obvious remedy to give you more energy is Olive. The fatigue of Olive comes from having a prolonged illness, such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME or Covid.

Hornbeam
Hornbeam is known as ‘The Monday Morning Feeling’. Its for when you think you don’t have the energy strength to get through the day (You do really, but it might take you a couple of hours and a few cups of coffee to get going).

Combatting the Winter Blues

We’re nearly at the end of January – which is sometimes referred to as the ‘longest month’ . In the northern hemisphere, we’ve lived with grey cloudes: grey days and what seems like continuous rain. But we can manage that. However, even though the weather is ‘grey’, its the lack of light that affects so many people.

Scientifically termed Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), this condition manifests through symptoms such as low moods, lack of energy, increased anxiety, and depression.

The Darkness

The darkness of winter seems to close in and leeches any self-worth you have and sapping your confidence. You have so much good in your life, you should be happy and yet the wretched SAD feelings breed feelings of sadness and guilt and weigh heavily on you.

Although we can cope with these feelings if they pass quickly, but when they build up over the winter months, they seem to go deep. And what happens when our feelings aren’t recognised and healed? They get pushed down, suppressed, depressed deep down and that’s where they fester turn into despair.

To help you navigate through this ‘dark’ time, here are a selection of remedies designed to uplift your spirits and rejuvenate your energy.

Remedies to help you lift the Winter Blues

Larch and Pine are inseparable companions. They go so well together.

Larch is for lack of confidence.

Pine is for feeling you’ve done something wrong or the feeling that you should have done better.

Mustard is one of the most common remedies taken for despair.

These are suggestions that could help you. You really do need to chose and use the remedies that suit you best.

Lack of Energy

Living each day with your body tense against the cold, wind, rain or snow, saps your energy – and no amount of chocolate seems to help!

SAD brings lethargy and despair and you feel as if you want to sleep half the day. And talking of sleep you didn’t really feel like getting up this morning, did you? The thought of a Duvet-Day is alluring!

You’re weary of cold grey days. Motivation is a thing of the past and you become resigned to your situation so don’t even try to pull yourself out of it.

Olive is the remedy for prolong fatigue.

Hornbeam is for the Monday Morning feeling.

Wild Rose is for the feelings apathy and resignation.

Also Walnut is a must-have remedy for anyone sensitive to outside influences such as the phases of the moon, hay fever, and lack of light. Walnut help reduce your sensitivity to outside influences.

Bach Flower Remedies

I’ve mentioned 7 remedies that could help you that can help SAD, but I’m only giving you suggestions. Ideally you should read up on these remedies and see which ones suit you the best.

You can choose and mix up 6 remedies together. I know some like to mix more. But Bach suggested six and I work on the principle that he knew best! (I’m very much a “Pure-Bach-Lady”).

Here in the UK, the heat is now too hot to handle. I don’t know about you, but it certainly is for me. I can’t cope with intense heat. I know loads of you love the summer sun, but there are just as many of us who can’t cope with intense heat.

Bach Flower Remedies help me deal with the intense heat!

Too hot to handle

So, how are you managing with the heat?

To find the right remedies to help you, first you have to identify how the heat makes you feel.

This is how I feel when the heat is too hot for me to handle. Perhaps you feel like this too?

Feel ‘spaced out’ and can’t concentrate.

Grumpy and irritable – my nerves seem frayed at the edges.

Absolutly absolutely exhausted – I must lie down!

Rescue Remedy

This amazing remedy is a combination of 5 remedies, 2 of them: Clematis and Impatiens will help you cope with the heat.

Clematis

So, right now, I’m extremely susceptible to the ‘outside influence’ of the heat – so I add it to my ‘Heat Mix’.

When you take the appropriate remedy for your feelings, the Bach Flower Remedies do work. But remember they work subtly and gently, and you might not realise you’re feeling better, until you notice that you’re doing more, or not needing to lie down for so long.

Into a glass of water, put 2 drops of each of the remedies: Rescue/5 Flower, Beech, Olive and Walnut, and sip through out the day. If you’re travelling, put your chosen remedies into a 500ml bottle of mineral water, but because there is more water in the bottle than a glass, this time put 3-4 drops of each of the remedies into the bottle and sip frequently.

This is your remedy-water, not your thirst water. Remember to drink more water in this hot weather, that you would do usual.

This mix helps me get through the heat of the day, so I hope it’ll help you too.

Jessica was in her 50’s when she came to see me and she had only one problem. Well, she had more than one problem; she had lots of problems and they all related to lack of courage and lack of self-confidence.

You might not realise it, (unless you’ve experienced it) that a lack of confidence has far reaching effects. It can bring deep despair and a “depression” that affects every area of life. These days the word ‘depression’ is handed out to almost everyone who has difficulty dealing with some parts of life.

Like a rotten apple in the barrel, it only takes one apple to infect the whole barrel…and a lack of courage and confidence is the same – it infects every area of life.

Here’s Jessica’s story

Jesscia had been self-conscious since early childhood. She can still remember how embarrassed she got when people talked to her and how she always felt she couldn’t do as well as the other children her age.

She didn’t mix well with others, so was inclined to kept to herself.

But there’s more and I wonder if you can relate to any of these:

You automatically feel inferior to others.

You admire people who are successful, but don’t believe you’re capable of being successful yourself.

You expect failure.

Have used illness as an excuse so you don’t have to tackle something.

Feel useless and have no feelings of self-worth or self-esteem.

If so, your problem is simple – just like Jessica and you’re filled with self-doubt, you lack self- confidence.

It’s so quick and simple to say, and yet the lack of confidence, and having no courage, has a profound effect and influences every part of your life – it is the ‘rotten apple’ that affects the whole barrel.

Back to Jessica

As you can imagine, Jessica never made much of her career – even though she was quite capable. She did her work – but never any more. She’d never take risks or applied for promotion.

Jessica sat at the back of the office and plodded along. She was not prepared to step ‘outside the box’ because she was absolutely convinced she would fail. She knew what she could do and she stuck to it.

Do you doubt yourself and lack confidence?

It’s a blunt question I know, particularly as we might not know each other well. If you do then, relax, I know how you feel – because I’ve been there – more often than I’d care to admit! And I have a solution for you, so read on. I’ve suffered with self-doubt and have felt the knock-on effects all my life.

How well I remember trying to work out which remedy I needed when I first started to use the Bach Remedies. Not only did I find it difficult to identify how I felt but I couldn’t work out which remedy I needed. I didn’t realise then that we could have more than one feeling at once!

But we do, all the time. No wonder you find it difficult to identify how you feel.

A Nervous Breakdown

Jessica had never been good at handling the stress of life and some years ago had a nervous breakdown.

How does a ‘nervous breakdown’ show itself? For Jessica, it showed at first as an extremely severe bout of debilitating ‘flu, which hung about for months. She was emotionally and physically exhausted. She didn’t have the power: the confidence to face the world.

She was severely shaken by her bout of flu and she lost what little confidence she had and so had not been able to return to work.

During this time Jessica felt very alone. She’d often felt lonely but didn’t have the courage or confidence to meet new people and try new things. She blamed herself for not doing what she felt she should have done to live a fulfilling life. She said she felt she was constantly living with an undercurrent of shame and guilt that she hadn’t done more with her life.

Not Sleeping Well

Jessica wasn’t sleeping well either. She would wake around 3 am with the same anxieties: the same worrying thoughts night after night. She said it was rather like all her thoughts jumped onto a child’s merry-go-round and played there for hours. She couldn’t find a solution to any of her problems and night after night she would be awake while her troubles played on the merry-go-round.

Jessica was tired – exhausted in fact. She wanted to feel better and hoped to regain enough confidence to be able to go back to work.

So I mixed the following remedies together, especially for Jessica’s feelings.

The Courage and Confidence Mix

Larch – for self-confidence

Mimulus– gives courage to face the anxieties of life

Pine – to help heal the shame and guilt she felt for not trying to live a happier and more fulfilling life.

White Chestnut – to stop the unresolved thoughts from going around and around.

Olive – to help with fatigue and exhaustion

Gentian – as she was very discouraged from the set-back of his illness.

I’m sure you can relate to some of these feelings (if not all of them) and you can see how these remedies all work together beautifully to strengthen and give courage and confidence.

If you’re lack of confidence has gone so deep that its turned into depression, perhaps this article will help you.
