A while back I read a Facebook post that said “I’m so frustrated, everyone’s driving me nuts!”
I can show you a quick way to quell these feelings of frustration when things aren’t happening fast enough for you.
To do so, means telling you a story – one of my own stories (which I don’t often do).
Too much to do, too little time!
One day, needless to say, I was frustrated and irritable. I had too much to do in too little time (I know you can related to that) and my poor children were getting the brunt of my irritability. It must have seemed to them that they could do nothing right.
I’d picked them up for school after their afternoon sports. They were tired. It was a long day at school for little people and they were hungry, but for all that, they seemed to dawdle. I only realised 35 years later that children have no concept of time, so ‘hurry up’ means nothing to them.
But I was in a hurry. There was still so much I had to do before the end of the day and they were taking so long getting into the car!
I was cross and irritable with them and so naturally, they picked up the feelings from me, and they were now squabbling with each other. (You know how infectious feelings are).
This was not a good day – but wait a minute, isn’t every day sort of similar?
Short fuse snapped
Suddenly my short fuse snapped. I was finding it really hard to wait for them to get into the car. One of the other mums made a comment but unfortunately, but my feeble attempt at a tactful reply failed miserably!
“Hurry up” I said to the children. As they rushed to get into the car, my son dropped his bag and jumper. My daughter looked at me quickly, she knew there was more coming, so she turned quickly to run back to get her brother’s bag. My frustration mounted and I started to shout at them, and said forcibly “Get in the car. I’ll get the bag myself”. (Have you noticed how, when you’re in a hurry, it’s alway quicker to do things yourself?)
Home to Impatiens
Home at last and to the blessed Impatiens I immediately put 2 drops into a glass of water started to sip it.
I could feel the tension leave my shoulders and neck. I let out a long sigh. And, as quickly as you’re reading this, calm was restored.
The children were slow getting out of the car (keeping out of mother’s way as much as possible), but now I was content to wait. I said sorry to my beautiful children as I helped with loving kindness and care that had been inaccessible a few minutes ago. I was content to let them go at their own speed as I carried their school things into the house.
Changing frustration to patience.
Impatiens was the first Bach Remedy I ever took. And although I have elaborated a simple story to give you a full picture of Impatiens, I took it because I didn’t want to be cross and irritable with my beloved children.
