Overwhelmed and don't know what to do next

Do you recognise any of these traits in yourself?

  • You are normally confident, but something about an important project seems too big for you to handle right now.
  • You have temporarily lost connection to your purpose because your current situation is just too difficult to cope with.
  • You feel over-whelmed, but not by the feeling of too much to do in too little time, it’s more a feeling of being overwhelmed by responsibility.
  • You have periods when you feel like the task undertaken has such enormity and is just too difficult and you don’t know what to do.
  • You feel exhausted but also feel that you can’t ‘walk-away’ from your responsibilities.

If so, then you may be in an ‘Elm State’ and need to take the Elm Bach Flower Remedy.

Developing an Elm State?

The interesting thing about the Elm State and this feel of being inundated with responsibility, without knowing what to do, is that it is not something that appears suddenly… it creeps up on you. Slowly. Day by day...

Do you recognise this too…? That this feeling has been brewing for quite some time now…

Well… now you know!

If this is you... then you’re in need of the Bach Flower Remedy Elm - for when you feel overwhelmed by the responsibility of a particular project...

The Background to the Elm

Elm is in the biggest group of remedies that Bach recognised were for those who are depressed or in despair. This remedy is for when we loose our self-confidence when we’re overwhelmed by the weight of the work we’re doing (in the service of mankind).

My Personal Reflections

Like most people, I don’t see the Elm state coming on for my own situation. I certainly wouldn’t call myself ‘depressed’ at these times, although the sofa does seem to have a strong magnetic pull and I’ve gone ‘beyond’ thinking.

I do believe I have the passion to spread the brilliance and power of the Bach Flower Remedies far and wide. I have the passion to teach others to use the remedies so they can help themselves and others, and I recognise that I have the gifts and talents to do that, but I am still learning the necessary skills. I sometimes feel overwhelmed that we are all 'swimming upstream'... that the is too much to do and it's all just impossible. I can't do it... nobody could do it. It's impossible and there's no way out of that situation.  That's pure 'elm'.

Your own Unique Situation

If what you’re trying to achieve feels too much for you to do on your own: if you feel you don’t have the confidence to even begin to take steps forward then you need Elm.
Although I’ve mentioned spreading the word of Bach as my ‘path in life’ and sometimes it feels a heavy responsibility, but there are other examples of feeling the weight of responsibility.  Imagine how difficult it can be for a single parent to work and bring up children the best they can.  This is a really important job.  There are other circumstances too, when the weight of your work can knock your confidence.

Elm, like Larch and Cerato, is fundamentally a confidence remedy.

Other remedies that can support an Elm State

Humans are complex and emotions are complicated...  there are often a mixture of emotions that all go together. Quite commonly you might find that these two remedies will be needed along side Elm:

Wild Oat – to help you find direction in life.
Mimulus – if you’re anxious you can’t do what needs to be done.

What to Do Next...

I hope you have found this information helpful and that you see the immense power of the Bach Flower Remedies.

  • Would you suggest taking Elm and Larch together, it do they overlap? Will Elm help with confidence as well?
As usual, thank you for your insight.

    • Rose Todd says:

Hello Barbara. Thank you for asking about Larch and Elm.
There are 3 ‘confidence’ remedies. They all have ‘different causes’ for the loss of confidence.
Larch looses confidence – over 1 incident – very probably when you were very young , You wont remember it.
Elm – is overwhelmed by the responsibility of their work – and this saps their confidence.
The third is Cerato – they don’t trust their own judgement – so they lack confidence (they ask others).
So – I wouldn’t put ]Larch and Elm together, I would look for and find the cause of the loss of confidence.
Find the cause – it’ll help you find the correct remedy.
I hope this is helpful. if not get back to me and I’ll try again. Love Rose

      • Hi Rose and Barbara.Over the years I have been aware that a deep seated lack of confidence in my self, was holding me back in life as a whole. After speaking with Rose I began to realise that being mocked and constantly ridiculed by both my 3 siblings and both of my parents, it really was not surprising that my self esteem and self confidence, were non existent
I hid it all behind a cheerful facade
So the 2 remedies that really helped me were Larch and Agrimony. I feel so much happier now and quietlt confident
I have also had loyal support and kindness from some key people in my new life too, which helps deeply as well
        Hope this is helpful. Janet
